Especially since the election of Barack Obama, Republicans who do not object to every proposal the president makes are accused of not really being Republican. This once unofficial trend has become doctrinaire (the ranting of Limbaugh, Coulter, Beck, Hannity and others) and has now been codified as of Friday, January 29, 2010: A proposal for a “litmus test” which would have required candidates to affirm ten core conservative positions (Ten Commandments anyone?) did not materialize but what did still amounts to a creed: GOP candidates must support the party's platform if they want gold for their war chests.

The rest of us are trapped in this mythical world. And not only is ancient history mythologized but so is American history – the myth of a Christian Nation. And as rapidly as events happen in the real world, they are mythologized – re-interpreted to fit, to conform to the system. It is becoming difficult for the real world – and us – to keep up with the spin.

I thanked them for sharing their beliefs with me. We parted on good terms, and the older gentleman expressed a desire to speak to me again. If it means a dialogue, rather than a monologue, I’m in. Because the kind of Christians who will listen to us are the kind we need.

This is a debate we would not even be having, we would not be forced to listen to and to endure, if it were not for monotheism. There was no Satan in the days of polytheism for people so sell their souls to. This was an accusation that could not have been made. And therefore, a debate which could not have taken place.

Mr. Douthat believes that “the debate that Brit Hume kicked off a week ago is still worth having. Indeed, it’s the most important one there is.” I disagree. How is what one person’s religion might be of such profound importance? It’s his religion – not yours. It’s his business – not yours. It’s one thing to say: “This is my religion: this is what we believe.” Fine. Do it. It’s another entirely to say, as Hume did, “Tiger Woods needs access to a superior religion in answer to his problems.”
