Very sad to see, Metatron. Thanks for sending that my way. It's disturbing to see this happening and it's just as disturbing to see the Air Force trying to keep it quiet. If this had been a Church it would have been on the front page everywhere. I'll put a post together about this!

Hi Hrafnkell. Long time reader, first time poster. I just thought I'd share some disturbing news here. Christians have desecrated a Wiccan worship space:

http://www.veteranstoday.com/2010/02/03/christians-desecrate-wiccan-religious-site-at-air-force-academy/

Hopefully this is just an act of desperation by fanatics who realize they're losing.

Best regards.

I think that's precisely the problem, Martin. If one side sets itself apart and won't engage in discourse because everything outside itself is seen as false (Jan Assmann's "false gods do not translate") then how do we ever have a dialogue? It becomes a monologue instead: "You're wrong, you're going to hell," etc. Not helpful at all.

And the thing is, Hans Küng would not have had to say what he said if it were not for monotheism. If we were all polytheists still, we would not be having this discussion and I would never have felt a need to start blogging or writing about these subjects.

So you got me thinking, what if any safeguards do we have up here in Canuckistan on the separation of church and state?
http://www.religioustolerance.org/sep_cs_can.htm

and, "Are there any examples of religious intolerance?"

http://www.religioustolerance.org/rt_canad.htm

Unfortunately, Canadians have no moral authority here despite what the majority may think:
http://www.hiddenfromhistory.org/historyfiles/html/2007-12-02-separation-of-church-state.html

Hans Küng, the internationally renowned theologian, has famously said, “There will be no peace among the nations without peace among the religions. There will be no peace among the religions without dialogue among the religions” (Küng, 2005).

I guess the question is, how do you have a dialogue with a party that refuses to sit at the table?

They're re-written American history (and ancient history as well) and created a Mythic America to which they can appeal. It's more falsehood-friendly than actual history, actual fact.

What I find funny is when I hear stories about the Tea party touting how we need to get back to following the constitution, but they begin their meetings with a prayer to the xtian god which completely goes against the forefathers belief of keeping religion out of government.

What is frustrating for me is that so many people seem blithely unaware or unconcerned by the direction things are going. The threat of Christian dominionism is real and though this is a tired old phrase it is no less true: those who ignore the lessons of history are doomed to repeat them. People laughed at Hitler and his 20+ followers too. Look where that ended up.

Most people can hardly fathom where these people are coming from. When you write it down - when I wrote that down - it looks absurd on paper. Are you kidding me? Somebody actually believes that? Yes, they do. And they want YOU to believe it too. And they're willing to overturn the Constitution in order to meet that agenda.

I'll look at Gus' piece this morning. I like his stuff. And that is something I've posted about before as well. Black slavery was actually a product of Christianity. The idea of enslaving one particular ethnicity and saying they're good for nothing but slavery didn't exist until enshrined by a Papal bull. Yet Christians labor under the illusion that their religion is anti-slavery - I've pulled out all the quotes and evidence before and it will no doubt wash right off their teflon but it's no less true for being ignored.

A lot of what you're describing sounds like paranoid personality disorder (DSM-IV-TR = 301.0)--insofar as such a diagnosis can be applied to a group rather than to an individual. In a way, this is not surprising, given that the United States has endured decades of Cold War, the Vietnam debacle, and the events on and after 9/11/01.

Another possible ingredient in the mix is racism (again not surprising, given the history of the U.S.) Gus diZerega has blogged about this at http://blog.beliefnet.com/apagansblog/2010/02/james-okeefe-conservatism-racism-and-a-religious-connection.html#more

Looked at from the outside, it appears as if the U.S. is one of the most highly polarized countries on earth. Polarized racially, religiously, economically, and just about every which way there is. And it seems to be a downward spiral. Back in the day (<i>circa</i> 1960), a disaster like Hurricane Katrina would have drawn together U.S. citizens of all stripes in a rescue-and-rebuild effort. In the event, however, it became simply one more political football. And we now have a GOP who, if the (black) President says that it's Wednesday, feels obliged to insist that it's Thursday. I see no good coming of this.
