The Life and Thoughts of a Modern Day American Heathen

Some More Alleged Equality Before God

I wanted to add a couple of examples to my post in response to Hart’s revisionist account of Christian history:

1. Prudentius, a Christian poet from Spain (390 CE): “Roman and Barbarian are as distinct one from another as are four-footed beasts from humans” (Contra Symmachum ii. 815-817).

2. St. Jerome, his contemporary, was sure some of the Germans were cannibals (this from someone who literally thought he was eating the flesh and drinking the blood of Jesus).

Everyone is equal before Christ, huh, Mr. Hart? Obviously, Christianity led to a real revolution in thinking…NOT.

  1. Okay, I'm posting this here because it's your latest entry, but you've gotta check this out. Apparently some conservatives think that the Bible is TOO LIBERAL.

Once you're done laughing, I'm pretty sure you will get horrified.

  2. For giggles – barbarian, βάρβαρος (bárbaros)meant "Non Greek" or someone who did not speak Greek…was onomatopoetic in "imitating" the sound of babbling. And while we are playing with words…Pagan…Paganus in the Latin, meaning rural or country dweller. And Annyikha, I about choked on my drink when I went to the "Bible is too Liberal" link! Hraf, you really DO have to go look at that. So much for the soft drink…I need a beer!

  3. Wow, that's something else, Annyikha. Unlike the reviewers, I got the site to open for me. I would like to think this is a massive joke played on the conservatives but I've seen so many other unbelievable things come from them in recent years that I suspect that's a pipe dream.

It's interesting that they admit the Bible has been modified over the years…usually their position is that "as is" it's the word of God. Of course, their position seems to be that it has been modified to make it more liberal, not more conservative, which is certainly open to debate (the "Great Commission" material in Mark (16:9-20) was not original and that's about as conservative as it gets, as millions of dead can attest.

  4. Could we apply that then, Cameron, to those speaking in tongues? :)

  5. LOL! Good point! I have for years sat and listened to the arguments about "speaking in tongues" and known and unknown languages and interpretation and even at the hight of my conservative years, that particular debate was right up there with how many angels could dance etc. Barbarians indeed!

  6. A propos the Conservative Bible Project, I agree that it's difficult to tell whether they're geniuses who are putting us on or lunatics who really mean it. In fact, this article inspired me to come up with a slightly restated version of Poe's Law:

“Without a winking smiley or other blatant display of humor, it is impossible to create a parody of Fundamentalism that is distinguishable from the real thing."

  7. I don't know either, Makarios. I did send the article on to Bart Ehrman and he wrote back to say it looks like they're serious, so I'll have to trust his instincts on this one.

I love your version of Poe's Law. Brilliant. And dead on!

  8. Having looked at the home site of the "conservative Bible" which is Conservapedia, a "wikipedia" rip off for conservatives, I can tell you this – they are dead serious. For humor go to "The Wittenburg Door".
