Extreme Earth Addendum – The Math of Anthropogenic Global Warming
Since those who argue against the reality of anthropogenic global warming (AGW) tend to resort to arguments about the math (“the math doesn’t add up!”) I thought I’d throw out a few links to clarify the true situation with regards to the mathematics of AGW. I hope these help, and I’d like to thank Mike Kaulbars for sending them my way:

Let’s accept that it behooves us all to educate ourselves as much as possible with regards to climate change. I am not a scientist. My degrees are in history and philosophy. But I can think and I can reason and one of my favorite classes in college outside of my degree areas was “Biology of the Environment” – a class which really opened my eyes to what we, as humans, are doing to our environment, either intentionally or incidentally.
If we are going to argue a point of view, we need to understand both sides of the issue, familiarize ourselves with the arguments pro and con. As a polytheist, I am all too familiar with the conservatives’ strategy of repeating obvious falsehoods in the face of all evidence to the contrary. It really doesn’t matter how many facts you pile on; they will accuse you of what they themselves are guilty of: being sheep and avoiding facts. I think the same thing has happened with the science of climate change as has happened with religion.
As I said before, evidence becomes subservient to theory. Simply stating that something is true does not make it true, no matter how often you insist upon it. You ought at least to be able to summon some facts to your side rather than saying everybody else is an idiot, or issuing a dogmatic “you’re wrong” over and over again. If you have evidence, provide it. It’s as simple as that.
Yet too many “deniers” refuse to do so. While claiming the evidence is in their favor, they refuse to provide it. While claiming that “scientific consensus” is meaningless they imply that a minority opinion carries more weight than a majority opinion (can you imagine anything more nonsensical than that???). They claim most scientists fault AGW but when proven that a consensus actually supports AGW they change their argument and claim it’s no surprise given the climate – who would dare oppose it and suffer condemnation? The fact is that there IS a consensus and the fact is that most of those “scientists” who find against AGW are not peer published and the fact is that many of them work for polluting industries, like coal, and so have a vested interest in denying AGW.
So as always, let’s educate ourselves. Whether you accept AGW as a reality or as a myth, educate yourself. Let’s look at the evidence and arrive at conclusions that are pointed to BY that evidence. Let’s look at facts, not rhetoric, and question, always question. Question with the ferocity of Socrates.

Even if it isn't caused by human beings, what's the harm in treading lighter on this planet? It just seems to me that these folks who deny global warming just don't want to change their lifestyle and habits. It comes down to laziness IMHO. You know? I mean oh no, having to remember your cloth bags. Whew, that's asking way too much.
I've also heard from conservatives that they don't do anything because to love the planet or help it in any way is "pagan" and thus against their beliefs. So that sort of backs up your idea, H, that taking care of this planet is, it would seem, intrinsic to the ways of our folk and ancestors. And wow, what does that say about those faiths that teach such?
Good info to know! Thanks. (:
That's what I've always said as well, Gran…even if it wasn't being caused by us, it is only common sense that we reduce emissions and other forms of pollution.
But I suppose if a person comes from an ideology which asserts that this life has scant value compared to some future "heaven" then ignoring the planet's cries makes sense. I think it's a negative, death-worshiping superstition that would engender such a view.
I think you're right. The ole Catholic saying is, "This is a vale of tears." And from the Hebrew scriptures the idea of, "All our works are as filthy rags…" Well, if you believe that then yeah, what's the point if you're looking for your god(s) to fix everything or worse *destroy* everything in fire and take the faithful to a new realm?
Now sure I have talked to a few who were into organic farming, recycling etc but…few.
The referenced temperature graphs are out of date and in any case from corrupt land based meteo stations. It should not support a Master's degree. Use some current data and avoid the GISS because they are required to use Authoritarian Hansen's corrupt data. No science like it!
Following the precautionary principle is not the scientific method. CO2 is leaking out of the oceans as they warm. Gasses have the property of inverse solubility; look it up. That is the scientific criticism of Al Gore's correlation of temperature with CO2; CO2 trails.
Says, Dr. Manns, the man who works for the mining industry. Nothing like having a vested interest in denouncing AGW. If you will pardon the comparison, this is like listening to a Catholic priest tell me the resurrection really took place. And it carries about as much weight.
Here is how impressed I am by what anyone affiliated with the coal industry has to say (from Union of Concerned Scientists):
"Just last month, a lobbying firm representing the coal industry forged several letters, claiming to be from local minority and senior citizen groups, urging at least three members of Congress to oppose climate and energy legislation they were about to vote on."
These people will stop at nothing.
