Here’s the deal though, everything is ok so long as their god is behind it. Murder, rape, beatings, theft, war…you name it. So most Christians would not see the logic of this list and the absurdity it points to. They would nod and smile and go, “Yep, that’s right.” So long as it’s “revealed” it doesn’t matter what sense, science, reason and logic say because it *has* to be true and everything else is automatically wrong without even having to consider the evidence.
Hrafnkell,
Well done! *claps*
If God ordered people to be slaughtered, it was a “divine plan” and there was sound reason behind it. This may be the logic that fundamentalist Christians follow.
As long as the world’s monotheistic majority, both moderates and fundies, don’t care to see how murderous their god is and keep insisting that the “true essence” of Judaism, Christianity and Islam is peace and tolerance, we pagans can do nothing about the situation.
I remember something I read in wikipedia last year. It was stated that the entire philosophy of monotheism (the kind of philosophy they have is what the Hindus call “The Philosophy of Fools”) was created to resist paganism. Whereas paganism’s ethos had no similar agenda.
It’s a point worth noting.
Yeah, I hate even posting stuff like this at times because I feel like I’m beating a dead horse, but I thought it was a good piece so I posted it anyway. You definitely got it right, Granamyr!
I wish I could take credit for writing this, Indrani. As it is, I can only take credit for recognizing good reasoning when I see it.
And you’re right about Paganism, which isn’t a response to anything. It exists because it exists, not because of a perceived need to beat down other belief systems. I like that term, “the philosophy of fools”. Very apt.
Number 1 (they know less about their Christianity than atheists and heathens) I find it pathetically true. From that point on, you can´t even discuss anything seriously with a christian since they´re completely unaware of what their religion is about. I can´t believe that while we´re so eager to know and learn more of our gods (and sometimes this is not possible for the scarce sources) they consider themselves “religious” and be so apathic with their religion at the same time.
Truly frightening isn’t it, Gabriel? All these doctrines and dogmas and no knowledge at all.
