Hello again!

"As far as time and place go, do you mean calendar time or time of day?"

Well, I'm interested in the calendar and time of day issues... I've read up on some of the Heathen seasonal observances but would like to know more...

I am also interested in the when of holding observances... is there a time of day prefered or simply whenever is convenient for those assembling?

I am also interested in the transition point from were here to honor the Gods/Season at some point this evening, to "it's time to start."

In Witchcraft we have drawing the Circle. How do Heathens perform this "all right folks, it's on!!" function?

"I have already started a second article which discusses the place factor, and I hope to have that posted this weekend."

I look forward to it!

While I am happy in my Witchcraft, and in some relationship with the Gods of Greece, I am always interested in understanding how others honor and relate to their Gods and faith as it always ends up making me thing about my own faith and relationship with my Gods.

Peace,
Pax

Pax, thanks for your comments. I apologize for not being more specific in my phrasing. It's always risky to generalize and it does look as though I did just that in my comments about Wicca and magic, and I have no problem with magic - it's a part of Norse culture as well, but it's not the same as religion and I blame Llewellyn for that. In fact, if you substituted the term "Llewellyn Wicca" for Wicca you'd more closely approximate my thinking as I wrote this piece. I plan to put it on Mos Maiorum among the other articles and I'll make the necessary changes before I do so.

As far as time and place go, do you mean calendar time or time of day? I have already started a second article which discusses the place factor, and I hope to have that posted this weekend.

Hrafnkell,

Your usual fascinating work and delightful work! If you haven't already could you post about how Heathens go about Bloting... I am especially interested in how one delineates the time and place in Heathen ritual.

Shortly before I left Anchorage I had the priveledge of coordinating our Pagan Pride and had the pleasure of having a Troth member and and ADF'er organize our Pagan Pride Ritual... it was one of the finest public rites I've seen done and would love to hear more of your input on ritual and honoring the Gods.

If I might make a point though... The Witches Esbat or monthly meeting is ~supposed~ to be first and foremost about honoring and communing with our Gods.

I will admit that there are a lot of Circles and Covens out there who don't always seem to get that...

The seemingly obligatory spell casting portion of the open/public rite (an especial pet peeve of mine) for example...

...and I get that you need to differentiate for both some of our fellow Pagans as well as the Christians out there that Heathens are different from Witches, but worship is a big part of what we Witches are supposed to be about at our meetings too!

Peace, and my $0.02...
Pax
witch*er*y/ n. 1 witchcraft. 2. power exercised by beauty or eloquence or the like. ~Oxford American Dictionary of Current English New American Edition (2000)
http://chrysalis1witchesjourney.wordpress.com/

Indrani: Yes, women were very well off in Heathen society. They lost a great deal with the coming of the White Christ. And how Sigvatr must have seethed! To be ignored, AND on account of lowly women! His Christian heart must have been near to bursting with resentment. I always smile when I think about that story.

Thanks for commenting, Stars. Another Hellene! Good to meet you. Cheeks is a Hellene as well, as is Annyikha. The woods are thick with Hellenes, as they say :)

How very interesting this is! I'm a Hellenic pagan, so I don't know a lot about the Norse ways, but I find it very fascinating. Great post! :)

Hrafnkell,

I noticed the blots where women were given pre-eminence over men. I've always known - and this is not to begin a gender war - that Scandinavian women held a high place in society and were able to own land in their own right.

The Vikings are a fascinating people. Thank you for this wonderful post.

And yes, I can only chuckle at the misfortune of Sigvatr. He must have been pretty annoyed at being ignored! LOL!!
