2008
This is from the New York Times: On Dec. 2, 1954, the Senate voted to condemn Sen. Joseph R. McCarthy, R Wis., for “conduct that tends to bring the Senate into dishonor and disrepute.”
It’s interesting how just a half-century later, Republicans tried a little McCarthyism on for size, Michele Bachman urging the media to investigate members of congress for anti-Americanism, McCain and Palin trying to paint Obama as “the other”, someone “not like you and me,” someone not to be trusted.”
You’d think this sort of fear-mongering, in living memory, would be enough, but apparently not. There are actually rabid fanatics out there still, compiling lists of conspiracy theories against Obama, or who paint him as the mythical “anti-Christ.”
It’s sad and more than a little frightening that these people actually seem to believe what they’re saying. It’s sadder still that McCarthy isn’t quite the ghost he should be. Like dead people, dead ideologies should stay dead.

The thing that I found amazing was the same state the voted overwhelmingly for Obama also re-hired Bachman. A friend wanted me to sign a petition requesting that Bachman be censured but I declined. Of course by the time that all came about I don’t think it would have had the expected impact anyway. Besides, I thought Americans were smart enough to see through her…
Just when I think I have the minds of Americans figured out…. I learn I give too much credit!
I was quite surprised that Bachman won as well. I was even more surprised when she claimed “WE” elected Obama and gave herself a pat on the back. But she was not finished. I would have thought it impossible that I could be more surprised than that until she claimed, on camera, that the claim she suggested an investigation of Congress was an “urban myth”!!!!!
Of course, we have her, ON CAMERA, suggesting just that. Do these people NOT know how cameras work? Have they heard of recording devices? Television? The woman is not only grotesquely intolerant, but grotesquely stupid as well.
Someone I know said Obama was the anti-Christ. You know what I don’t get? The anti-Christ is only going to be a negative for the followers of Christ. What do I care, as a non-Christian, what some dude does or believes regarding Jesus? Either I like the guys views or I don’t. I don’t give a crap if a person is anti-Whatever so long as they abide by the Constitution and support my personal freedoms that this country allows me.
