The Life and Thoughts of a Modern Day American Heathen

Rick Warren’s Biblical Blowback

Rick Warren tells Sean Hannity “God puts government on earth to punish evildoers.” If that’s true, says Louis A. Ruprecht Jr, of Georgia State, then based on the Bible verses Warren’s quoting, the US (having taken over Israel’s job) should expect regular and severe judgment for her OWN patterns of ‘wickedness’ and ‘straying.’

Okay, it’s been a couple of days since I had time to post, what with the site and forums. But this is the sort of thing that requires a response. I encourage everyone to go to digg and chime in with their thoughts (though of course I welcome them here as well! My own response is this:

With all due respect to Rick Warren (and he has a right to believe anything he wants) he’s full of shit. No god put governments on earth – not his god, not mine (and yes, I’m a polytheist so I believe in more than one god). I have to go with Hobbes who said that humans made governments out of self interest, because in a state of nature, life is “nasty, brutish, and short.”

Hannity is as big a dickhead as Warren.

The thought that our foreign policy could be controlled and directed by such warped thinking is truly frightening. These people haven’t learned a thing from history. The Jews who rebelled against Rome in 66 CE were trying to “force God’s hand” to bring about the End Times. It doesn’t work. Look at the holocaust that took them down. Then think of the kind of holocaust we’re facing with nuclear weapons, chemical agents and biological weapons. We don’t want these people anywhere near a button.

You think Islamic terrorists are dangerous? They’ve got nothing on Christian Fundamentalists.

  1. Sean Hannity IS a royal asshole. Yeah, I love how the default god here is the Yahweh god. Let’s imagine any other person making this statement.

“Odin put government here to punish evil doers.”

“Shiva put government here to punish evil doers.”

“Zeus put government here to punish evil doers.”

Put any other deity in there from a just as serious believer as they are and they would ALL think it’s just as nonsensical as we do. That’s because really, inside, they *want* to believe everything is OK and controlled by their Big Daddy In The Sky but they also know that…it isn’t. They’re using their religion as a vehicle to justify action.

Indeed…keep these freaks away from buttons. As Trillion told Zaphod, “Buttons aren’t toys.”
