The Life and Thoughts of a Modern Day American Heathen

A Great Site

No, it’s not my own :)

I want to extend kudos to a very good site I found yesterday. The information there is well presented and will enable me to improve my footnotes on Mos Maiorum by an order of magnitude (hint: no more unappealing [1], [2], etc).

The site is Scholarship on the Web and for those of us who are intent on citing our sources, the options presented here on invaluable. The site is run by a history professor, of course, Paula Petrik, Professor, Department of History & Art History at George Mason University, Fairfax, VA. I’d looked at several other sites looking for solutions before I stumbled upon hers and there is no comparison.

The author discusses five possible ways of applying footnotes. He carefully lists their pros and cons and explains how to use each method, providing not only examples but the code itself. I cannot tell you how much time this one site alone has saved me.

And being able to improve my pages! I wish that I could use that method here but I don’t know if any of them would be supported by Blogger, so I’m likely stuck with the nasty old [#]‘s.

Unfortunately, I don’t know how soon I’ll be able to get started on making the changes. I’ve played with them on another site I’m working on to test them out and they work and look great.

But the holidays are coming and I am still tweaking the site and adding things. I added two links yesterday, one for Tertullian.org and one for “Fourth Century Christianity” which hosts many documents related to that period of Christian history. This type of information is invaluable for anyone wanting to explore the true nature of ancient polytheism and its demise.

I’m trying to think of a way to make note of changes, however minor, to the site, without having to change things like the notice of Anssi’s article (which is far more important than the links!). It may call for some redesign because it is good to keep people appraised of changes to sites without cluttering their mail boxes with notices.

I’m very pleased by how things are going on the forums. We’ve added a few more people and I look forward to hearing from them. I think the discussions are great and I’ve already learned several things I didn’t know. And thanks to Pom’s suggestions we have a couple of new forums which I have no doubt will be hosting some interesting discussions.

Thanks to you all for your support!

  1. Hrafnkell,

I’d like to join as a member of the Mos Maiorum fora. After you accept my membership I’d like to host the URL of MM on my blog.

I’m especially keen on reading the material you’ve collected on Tertullian.

How do I get myself a membership at MM? Please let me know. Thanx!

  2. Either go to the forums and click “join” or send me your email address and I’ll extend an invitation directly. I have to approve memberships but I check the forums at least twice a day so the wait should not be long.

  3. My email address is: moerai2008@yahoo.com

Thank you for allowing me in!
